Education Program 

Swadesh Mrittika Biddaniketon

Education is a pre-conditional issue for the development field and it is the basic and prime need of the people living in the community. Due to extreme poverty, most of the people are deprived of education. At present Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha is working for non-formal and formal education and will look forward technical and IT education on priority basis. Considering the current need, Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha is effectively implementing the following education projects in Bangladesh. Education is the right of every human being living on this earth. Due to extreme poverty in Bangladesh, more than 40% of the total population of the country are deprived of education. Currently, Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha is implementing non-formal education program in the target areas in Bangladesh.  More than 135 underprivileged and dropped out children are getting non-formal education through Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha through 02  education centres in Raipura upzila  of Narshingdi  district and Khalishpur upazila in Khulna District. The project is providing basic education specifically literacy, numeracy, social science, religious education for the respective religion, health and hygiene awareness and education in emergency includes disaster preparedness. Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha is looking forward to set up formal school for the poor and orphan within shortest possible time.

Background of the project :

Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha has been implementing different kinds of development activities in the operational areas for economic and cultural up liftmen of the urban poor, vulnerable women and children. It mainly emphasizes the females and children as target group and about 90% target people is females and children. It emphasizes the development of children and females mainly as they are the main and most victims in the society. Child and adult education is one of the most important and ongoing programs of the organization. So far it has made literate about 735 females and educated about 350 children, who are children of age of 8-11 in the most disadvantaged and deprived slum areas because, in the project areas (slums areas), about 80% people is illiterate and socially unconscious, so, they do not send their children to schools for education, moreover, due to disadvantaged and isolated areas, there are not educational institutions for  the children, so, they are not getting any educational opportunities due to lack of parental awareness and opportunities.

The literacy rate of the slum area is only 18% but among the target people it is about 6-8%. So, most of the group member are illiterate and socially less conscious. They do not sent their children to school for education due to poverty and parental awareness about the value of education so thousands of children are becoming deprived from their basic needs and rights. However child marriage, child laborers, child abuses, child sexual harassment, physical torturing, child trafficking etc. are increasing.

Children of slum area are quietly by passed from the development activities. They are not getting any environment to spread their quality, capacity, inner hearts etc. due to lack of facilities & supports. The condition of the females is also the same. They are not well permitted to go out of the families, participate in education and economic activities. They are the burden of the family as well as the society; they are not earning any income for the family, whereas most of the hold they accomplish activities. They have no participation in family decision making and other is male domination. Females are not getting any opportunities to spread out their inner-hearted competence. From our survey and working experience, it has been found that there are many of children of age 8-11, who are not getting any education facilities from any corner. Moreover, due to parental unconsciousness, illiteracy and un-realization of the value of education, they do no not send their children to school.

They become the dominant of two ways one is social domination and involve in different household works which prevent the children to go to schools and create an unconscious nation, which leads to increase gradual poverty. Now the members are gradually realizing the value of education, as the prior and foremost for any development program for the poor and vulnerable people. Considering the needs and importance this project has planned.

Project Justification/Rationale :

Children are the best future resources of the country as well as the nation. So, this resource should be nurtured from the early age for making them eligible citizen to contribute for the country. There are many of target aged children in the working slum areas, who are totally deprived from their rights and basic needs, which creates high rate of child laborers, Child marriages, illiteracy, unconsciousness, child abuse, child sexual harassment, physical torturing, migration, selling, trafficking child corruption’s etc. And the country is getting, an illiterate and unconscious nation, which produces more illiterate and unconscious nation in future and full of poverty. So, nation never would be free from the Curse of the illiterate and poverty. The females are 50% of the society is neglected and deprived from all sorts of involvement in decision-makings, economic activities and education, which have made the society paralyzed hindered all development efforts. With the fullest participation of the female, and the development of the children, no development initiatives and efforts will be successful, it has been found from our previous experiences. The rights and basic needs of the child the females should be fulfilled and opportunities should be created for them. So that society gradually marches forward to development. The slum children need education facilities, institutional facilities, cultural facilities, physical growing facilities, mental recreations opportunities for spreading their inner hearts, talents, capable citizen of the country and future parents. But for the development of the children, their parents should be developed first. Because, their parents are not aware and capable they could not afford for this children’s development.   So, their parents should be made aware and capable to ensure the rights and basic needs of the children. Considering the above facts, this project has been included children and their parents’ development programs mainly.

Project Description and Implementation Strategy:

The executive director, under the guidance and management of the Executive Committee, will be held responsible for all round activities of the project and he in cooperation of other senior staff and the project staff will render service for the project under the following steps and strategies. 

Staff Recruitment and training/Orientation:

Before starting the project implementation, necessary project staff will be recruited through maintaining proper formalities and interview and they will be provide orientation and training on project activities, goal, objectives, expected achievements, implementation strategies etc. By which they smoothly and effectively implement the project activities and achieve the project goal and objectives and prepare a feasible and appropriate action plan considering the feasibility and the situation and then they will be deputed to carry out their own duties and responsibilities at the field levels.

Conduct simple survey :

The senior staff members will prepare survey formats and the staff and teachers will conduct a simple survey among the early aged children of the targeted slums to select the targeted slum children for the program. The survey report will be prepared and submitted to the Executive Director, which will be followed up for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

Training planning and conduct training :

The training section will prepare training plan, materials; training schedules and modules as per the project proposal. The training course will be conducted for the teachers and supervisor. Mainly the coordinator of the organization will conduct the training course will be followed by a report, which will be used as the guidebook for the teachers. 

Reading and writing materials distribution:  

The accountant and the senior staff will collect the reading and writing materials from the market as per the budget considering the suitability of the target aged children of the slums and distributed among the slum children and the teachers according to the needs for the months. Proper records will be maintained for material distribution.

Classes start :

After distribution of the reading and writing materials and also school materials, the classes will be started. A meeting with the participation of the local elites, guardians and the staff members will be held in the first week. The classes will be continued for 3 hours in a day & 6 days a week and will be continued whole the year.

Educational subject :

The classes will be conducted mainly through encouraging subjects like games and sports, physical exercises, singing, dancing, recitation, drawing, etc. Basic literacy and numeric education will be provided with these, by which, they will get interest and encouragement for education and develop their school going habits.

Conduct Examinations :

Quarterly examinations will be conducted to justify the gained knowledge and ideas of the children, which will be made very easy process.

Monthly Staff Meeting :

Monthly staffs meeting will be arranged, where all the staff and teachers will attend, submit monthly progress reports, review the progresses, find out lacking, drawback etc. and also find out solutions. In these meetings, they will prepare plan for next month’s activities. 

Skill Development Training:

Swadesh Mrittika Manab Unnayan Songstha will train up the organized and educated children. So, steps will be taken to provide them those training course for six months, by which they can get jobs and earn incomes for themselves. The training course will be in Tailoring.  Children age group (11-13) years will get chance to receive the training course. About 15 persons will get training. Organization will set up training center on hiring basis and install all equipment and also necessary instructors.

Supervision and Monitoring :

The Supervisor will supervise, follow up and monitor the project activities and teachers regularly. The senior staff will supervise the activities of the field staff members, teachers regularly. Moreover the executive committee members, Executive Director will monitor the activities on monthly basis. The monthly staff meeting and participants meeting will review the activity performances and solve the created problems. All the staff will submit monthly progress reports and plan next month’s activities.

Reporting:

The Executive Director will compile the reports of the staff half yearly and submit to the donor agency and government departments.

Evaluation:

The project activities will be evaluated yearly basis internally and reports will be sent to the concerned officials. But final evaluation of the project activities will be conducted at the end of the project period by external evaluation team or by Donor agency. Report will be sent all concerned agencies. 

Auditing :

The project expenditures will be audited yearly basis at the each year by recognized audit firm and reports will be sent to the concerned agencies for information and action. Apart from, internal audit will be conducted by internal team of the organization.

Future Plan:

The Organization will implement this project in the slum areas and develop the target children and slum people. Considering the achievements and the project activities will be extended for further development of the children and their mothers in the slums. So, more project components will be included in future considering the needs and recommendations of the monitoring and evaluation. Organization wants to develop a sustainable program in the slum areas for the poor slum dwellers. 

Action plan :

An up to date action plan will be prepared before implementation with the discussion and consultation of the beneficiaries, and other stakeholders considering the time, situation, manpower, capacity, etc. Later on it will be sent to the donor agency and other related officials and personnel for information and follow up.

Project/Output/Impacts :

 Slum community people will be aware and they will continue the project with their won initiatives for their children’s education in the slums and also try to involve the local influential persons to run children education centers in the slums, because, they will be aware about the value of education and need of education. Rate of literacy will increase in the slum.
